Little Miss Sunshine (2006)

Little Miss Sunshine is one of the best films of the past two decades. It’s one of those quiet comedy-dramas about family that sticks with you long after you’ve watched it. Maybe it’s because most people’s families are not nearly as weird as the one portrayed here, so you leave the movie feeling a little better about your life. Also, Steve Carrell is the best. The Lion King (1994)

Controversial opinion: I think The Lion King is a tad overrated. I remember being so into this movie when it was released, but have fallen out of love with it over successive viewings. This is not to say that The Lion King is not a good movie. It’s definitely in the top ten of Disney’s best feature films. I’m just saying that it’s not the best animated feature the studio has made. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou (2004)

If you’ve never seen a Wes Anderson film, I recommend starting here. The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou is the one of Anderson’s more accessible comedies, and while it may not be his best work (I personally love The Darjeeling Limited), it’s still hilarious and visually stunning in a way that screams “Wes Anderson made this!” (Which may or may not be a good thing, depending on your thoughts about him as a filmmaker.) Liar Liar (1997)

This is pretty much the only “pure” comedy Jim Carrey has made that I really like. Before Liar Liar came out I was not a fan. To me he was just some dude that made stupid comedies that I was forced to watch, because my dad liked them, like Dumb and Dumber or Ace Ventura. But Liar Liar incorporates a little bit of seriousness, giving the audience a glimpse of Carrey’s very impressive acting chops. Continue reading

Lethal Weapon 4 (1998)

Sally
Ah, finally the last Lethal Weapon film (fingers crossed), and the only one I had previously seen! Of course, I don’t remember it at all. But why would I? This movie is best enjoyed by those familiar with the series. If you have no previous affection towards Riggs and Murtaugh, you probably won’t care about Lethal Weapon 4. One could also argue that you might not even care if you’d watched the first three movies. LW4 is an obvious cash grab and a lot less fun than any of the previous installments. Continue reading

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events (2004)

Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events is based on a series of popular children’s books that I have not read. Shocking, I know. My knowledge of the Baudelaire siblings comes exclusively from from this film. Based on the movie, I might be interested in picking up the novels. I definitely get the sense that there was a lot left out in this adaptation. Continue reading
